Kingstone Consultancy
Our Services
Kingstone Consultancy works with defence, maritime and energy clients on engineering problems that require specialist depth and independent judgement. Our team has delivered across power systems, cyber security, avionics, systems engineering, mechanical design, safety, aviation maintenance and through-life support, on programmes where getting it wrong was not an option.
The work sits across four areas, but real problems rarely stay in one. Most engagements draw on several disciplines at once, so we scope around what a project actually needs rather than fitting it to a fixed service line.
Every high-integrity system starts with the same question: what happens when something goes wrong. We design and review AC/DC and HV/LV power systems from below 440V up to 15kV, with protection philosophy and fault behaviour considered from the outset, not bolted on at the end.
- Design authority for high-integrity power systems, from architecture through to protection coordination
- Load analysis and power system studies
- Grid connection and fault level studies for generation and storage projects
- MATLAB and Simulink modelling, built on real operational data
- Independent review and validation of supplier-provided models
- Technical evidence for planning applications and statutory consents, including responses to regulator and local authority queries
Energy storage rewards patience and punishes shortcuts. Our experience spans platform integration through to grid-scale battery systems, with particular depth in NiZn chemistry and the hydrogen management and thermal challenges that come with it. We think in failure modes first, performance second, because that order is what keeps a system safe for its full service life.
- Battery integration design and safety justification
- Hydrogen management and thermal design
- Independent technical due diligence on battery energy storage systems, for developers, investors and operators
A system earns trust through evidence, not intention. We build test philosophies and verification programmes designed to deliver maximum assurance within the time and resource limits every real project actually has.
- Test philosophy and verification strategy
- Test programme design, inspection and test plans
- Client-side witnessing of factory and site acceptance testing
- Independent review of supplier test evidence
- Commissioning oversight for safety-critical infrastructure
- Operational readiness assessment and handover support
Safety cases are arguments, and arguments need to be built properly to survive challenge. We author safety cases from first principles through to regulator-ready evidence, chair the hazard workshops that shape them, and help clients reduce risk at the design stage, where it is cheapest to fix.
- Hazard identification and structured analysis, including independent HAZID facilitation and chairing
- Safety case authorship, from argument structure through to regulator-ready evidence
- Risk registers and design risk reduction
Standards are distilled experience, written down so the next project does not have to relearn the same lesson the hard way. We have authored, governed and maintained over fifty Defence Standards, and we have been active in programmes to rationalise some of them into British Standards. That gives us a rare vantage point: we know not just what a requirement says, but why it exists.
- Standards gap analysis and compliance mapping against Defence Standards, British Standards and class requirements
- Interpretation support: what a requirement actually demands, and how to evidence it
- Guidance on the Def Stan to British Standards rationalisation and what it means for live programmes
- Requirements and tender documentation authorship, and technical evaluation of supplier bids
- Supplier compliance review and non-conformance reduction
- Support responding to audit findings and regulator challenge
Security for operational technology is a different discipline to securing an office network. On a platform, a cyber failure can become a safety event, so we treat the two as connected problems rather than separate departments.
- Cyber security assessment for operational technology and platform systems
- Secure by Design support for defence programmes and suppliers
- Cyber input to safety cases and the safety-security interface
- Support with maritime cyber resilience requirements, including class and IACS expectations
- Supplier and supply chain cyber compliance review
- Security architecture review for control, monitoring and communications systems
Maritime platforms do not forgive engineering shortcuts, and neither do we. Our maritime work covers the electrical and power systems that keep vessels operating safely, from design through to in-service support.
- Technical input to vessel and mission-system integration studies
- Support with concept development, option evaluation and design review
- Owner's engineer and client-side representation during project delivery
- Review of shipboard electrical, propulsion and supporting system interfaces
- Assessment of operational, maintenance and through-life considerations
- Technical documentation, requirements support and engineering decision input
Uncrewed systems are scaling faster than the support ecosystem built to keep them airworthy, and crewed platforms carry the same pressure on evidence and availability. We combine avionics engineering with hands-on maintenance and continued airworthiness experience gained across naval aviation, ejection systems and globally deployed heavy lift UAS.
- Avionics and airborne systems engineering support
- Maintenance, repair, inspection and continued airworthiness support for UAS fleets
- Deployed field engineering: on-site fault finding, repair and modification, UK and overseas
- Structural and sheet metal repair assessment and support
- Airworthiness documentation, technical publications and procedure development
- Safety and human factors input to aviation and UAS operations
Resilience starts with knowing where your risk actually sits. We help clients see further into their supply chains, plan for disruption before it arrives, and expand production capacity without losing schedule to unplanned downtime.
- Supply chain risk assessment and monitoring
- Production facility expansion and capacity planning, balancing output against downtime across concurrent programmes
Complex programmes rarely fail from one bad component. They fail from requirements that drifted, interfaces that were never quite agreed, and architecture nobody owned. Systems engineering is the discipline that keeps everything else pointed at the same target.
- Requirements engineering and management
- System architecture definition and SysML modelling
- Interface management and integration planning
- Verification and validation planning
- Cross-domain coordination across electrical, mechanical, avionics and software elements
Good mechanical design earns its keep quietly, by not being noticed. We provide structural, thermal and mechanical design support for harsh and regulated environments, from first concept through to design for manufacture.
- Mechanical design and structural analysis
- Thermal design, including cooling system design for energy storage applications
- Design for manufacture and production support
- Structural integrity assessment for harsh-environment equipment
Platforms outlive their components more often than anyone plans for. We help clients spot obsolescence risk early, plan through-life support properly, and keep a platform operable, maintainable and safe for the length of its service life, not just the length of its warranty.
- Obsolescence risk assessment and forecasting
- Through-life support strategy and planning
- Component and technology end-of-life management
- Availability and maintainability input to design and support decisions
- Support to safety case revalidation where obsolescence drives a design change
Some problems need a product that does not exist yet. We design, prototype and build bespoke engineering solutions, from CAD through rapid prototyping to finished, deployable hardware, backed by real mechanical depth.
- Bespoke component and equipment design, from concept through CAD to finished hardware
- Rapid prototyping and 3D printing, for fast, low-risk iteration
- Ruggedised enclosures, mounts, fixtures and test equipment for harsh environments
- Design and build of bespoke solutions for productions and tours worldwide
- Fabrication, structural repair and modification to aviation-grade standards
- Design for manufacture input and small-batch production support
Sometimes the gap is not a project, it is a post. We provide specialist technical resource to organisations needing to fill a capability gap, cover absence, or scale a team for a defined period, across the same disciplines that run through everything else on this page.
- Interim and contract technical resourcing across our core disciplines
- Embedded specialist support within client teams and programmes
- Defined-term cover for capability gaps, secondments and absence
- Access to principal and chartered-level expertise without a permanent hire
Not every engagement needs an engineer at a drawing board. Sometimes it needs someone who has sat on the client side of a major programme and knows what good looks like. We bring delegated technical authority, procurement judgement and forward-looking governance to clients who need a trusted second opinion, not just a delivery team.
- Intelligent customer and owner's engineer support: client-side technical authority, supplier assurance and design review
- Programme and project management support, drawing on aerospace and defence programme delivery experience
- Applied AI and digital tooling for supply chain and risk intelligence
- Forward-looking risk and lessons-learned governance
- Bespoke, multidisciplinary packages of support, scoped around a project's specific needs
How we work
From brief to delivery
Discovery
We spend time understanding your project before we commit to anything: what you actually need, where the constraints sit, and what a good outcome looks like from your side.
Scoping
We agree the scope and the price, and that is what you get. No surprises on the invoice. If the work genuinely grows, we will talk to you about it first.
Delivery
We do the work, stay in contact throughout, and do not walk away until the client has what they actually came for. That means covering every reasonable base, not just hitting the scope and closing the file.
